Your Results are back… You have PCOS PT.2


I spent what felt like the longest week of my life, almost convincing myself that there was no way that I had PCOS, That was until I received the phone call that changed my life… That’s right a phone call, my doctor didn’t think that PCOS was serious enough for an in-person diagnosis.

‘Your results are back… You have PCOS’ This was swiftly followed by ‘However because you are overweight, we can not prescribe you with anything. Give us a call once you have lost weight and we will arrange a consultation’ Sadly this Is a story I hear all too often and Cyster after Cyster are left in the dark with a diagnosis that you don’t know how to handle, and advice that doesn’t even feel worthy of the title … Loose weight.

After this I spent years denying that anything had happened, I mean… what else was I meant to do? The people we are taught to trust had just left me stranded with a condition offering no explanation for what to Do, and only telling me that one the SYMPTOMS of the condition was to blame. and honestly, I tried, I googled day and night the days that followed my diagnosis trying to figure out how I could help… but everything I read contradicted its self, I was confused and overwhelmed, a feeling that I am sure soo many other women can relate to.

It was only a year ago that I started to really get serious about trying to figure out how to reserve my PCOS symptoms and hopefully balance out my hormones, it was very early into this journey that I realised it would be a life long task, a challenge if you will. I wasn’t going to find a magic cure, there wasn’t going to be one single thing that fixed me. The one thing that I realised I could control, was my mindset, how I view this condition and more importantly, how I view myself. Sadly it seems that women with PCOS are almost conditioned to hate themselves, We seek to actively change everything about about ourselves. And that raised one question for me…

What if we embraced everything’s that is beautiful about us today?

Lets Talk About The Four Types Of PCOS…

Yes… there is a type, pretty daunting I know, When I was first diagnosed with PCOS it was honestly the most daunting thing in the world for me, there was so much conflicting information out there, and you have all of these symptoms that you don’t understand because let’s face it… our doctors aren’t the most helpful when it comes to dealing with what I have now tagged a unicorn condition.

After years of purely looking for solutions for the symptoms I was experiencing and coming up short for answers, I decided that maybe the best thing I could do, would be to look at the root of this condition, what is it that is causing all of these symptoms? this was something I had shied away from for so long. I can’t say that after my hours of research that I magically found the answer, but I did find some information that changed the game for me, and has made my journey just a little bit easier. .Let me start off by asking this, are you aware of the different types of PCOS and what this means for you?

Have you tried was feels like 100 different herbs, exercises, diet plans? same… and none of them worked until I learnt this, PCOS is not a one size fits all diagnosis, this is because there are 4 different types of PCOS, and for many just from hearing about them and their symptoms most women can figure out what category they fit into, and what they need to do to help make this condition just a little more bearable, so let me tell you what the 4 types are.

  1. Insulin-resistant PCOS

Insulin-Resistant PCOS is thought to be the most common type, effecting a majority of the ladies who have been diagnosed. So what happens if you have this type?

With insulin resistance, you may experience normal blood sugar levels, but with high insulin, essentially this is because your cells in your muscles, fat, and liver don’t respond well to insulin and can’t easily take up glucose from your blood. As a result, your pancreas makes more insulin to assist with helping glucose to enter your cells. This then leads to inflammation in the body and weight gain.

Some of the symptoms of insuline resistance are;

Darkening of skin in the groin, armpits, or behind the neck


Frequent or increased urination

Increased hunger or thirst

Tingling sensation in the hands of feet

Craving sweet and salty foods

2. Inflammatory PCOS

With this type, Your body simply reacting to chronic inflammation, this inflammation can be caused by several different factors, one example being food sensitivities such as dairy. This inflammation then causes your ovaries to go into overdrive and generate too much testosterone, and as well all know as women too much testosterone is not good and completely throws our natural functions out of balance. One of the best ways to handle this can be by addressing what it is that is causing your inflammation and tackling it at the root.

Some of the symptoms of this type are;


Excessive Hair Growth

Hair Loss

Menstrual Cycle Irregularities

Fertility Issues

3. Post Pill PCOS

This type for me I have to say is the most self-explanatory of the 4, and in short, your symptoms may be a result of you withdrawing after coming off of the pill. Essentially, stopping the pill can cause the body to be thrown out of balance and in turn, this causes it to have a temporary surge in androgen’s, I know it is easier said than done, but the best advice for this type if to stay calm, because more often than note these symptoms are just temporary and will soon pass once your body has balanced it’s self out.

If the symptoms are overwhelming, then you can aid the process by taking natural androgen suppressants. You may be wondering what the symptoms of this type are, and honestly, it varies, but mostly the same symptoms are the inflammatory type. You can identify this type through personal circumstance, eg; have you just come off of the pill?

4. Adrenal PCOS

In contrast with insulin-resistant PCOS Adrenal PCOS only accounts for around 10% of PCOS diagnosis, so what is Adrenal PCOS otherwise known as DHEAS? This type includes the elevation of both Testosterone and Androstenedione from the ovaries, Sounds something like inflammatory right? wrong… unlike the other types Adrenal PCOS is caused by the bodies response to too much stress. This can be to much physical stress on the body through intense exercise, or emotional. Many women often find that with this type, the best way to get your symptoms under control is through practising more mindfulness in the way of mediation and yoga, but also by becoming more intuitive, and paying attention when your body is showing signs of elevated stress.

The symptoms pretty much the same as inflammatory.

Through research, I think that one of the most interesting things I have learnt is that for many women we won’t just fall into one type of PCOS, and in fact, for a majority of women we are battling with a combination, so while the symptoms may look the same, the root causes appear to be very much different. Showing that while one thing may work for one woman it may prove to be very ineffective for you, and the secret to battling this condition is understanding the uniqueness of your experience, and embarking on a journey through food, lifestyle, and exercise that it is tailored only for you. We can draw from another woman’s experience and take comfort in knowing that we are not alone in this experience, my best bit of advice would be to not be discouraged if something doesn’t work, go back to the drawing board and try again. You got this.

You Micro Cheated On Me?


Micro cheating, intriguing term right? I wonder when you heard it did you have the same questions as me? Have I been guilty of Micro Cheating, and better still have I ever been Micro Cheated on? Intrigued, I got to work with my research, determined to find out what this new term meant for dating today. Did It change the dynamic of things? and had we, in fact, all been guilty of cheating on our other halves without even realising It?

Cheating on a whole Is such a complex issue, according to a survey done by the economist in 2015, 41% of men admitted that they have thought about cheating on their partner at least once. For many this involves breaking the emotional and sexual exclusivity that comes with being in a relationship, and that’s pretty easy to determine, But is it that simple when it comes to Micro Cheating? lets break this down a little.

Micro cheating has no clear cut lines when it comes to what is considered micro-cheating and what isn’t, but the general rule of thumb is that overstepping the boundaries set within your relationship, would be considered Micro cheating, so just for an example if you have agreed to be mutually exclusive to each other then something such as signing in to an online dating website would cast you in the role of the cheater, Or it could be a little more complex then that, For example – Playing down your relationship to a crush, or making an extra effort when you know you are going to be seeing a certain colleague that day, maybe even liking a crushes Instagram photo with the intentions of getting their attention.

I mean most of that sounded pretty innocent right? WRONG! Psychologist and author Ty Tashiro have described micro-cheating as the beginning phases of cheating and in fact, these seemingly innocent acts can actually lead to much bigger problems down the line. This also raises the question of, ‘Is this relationship right for you?’ putting it into perspective micro-cheating might be the first sign that it is time to hit the road and call it a day before any more damage is done.

So now you may be wondering, how do I know if I’m micro-cheating, and I think I have the perfect answer for that, Are you doing anything that you wouldn’t want your partner to know about? if the answer is yes… then you may be guilty of micro-cheating, or better still if you do anything that makes the answer to the question ‘Would this hurt my significant other? yes, then its time to take a step back and change paths.

Mindfulness & Self-Care

City life can be fast passed… very rarely do we ever actually take the time to even think about what we truly want to eat, and when we do, we tend to reach for fast food because it fits into our busy schedule. One of the best things to come out of the recent lockdown that took Europe by storm was the opportunity that it gave me to actually take a step back and have a look at the lifestyle choices that I had made, and the bad habits that I had become accustomed to, By bad habits I mean how much I truly neglected myself. After a week of lockdown, I decided that it was probably time to take a step back and think about the things that I could do to improve my stress levels and gain new perspectives on life. Let me take you through some of the ways I like to unwind and reflect on life.

  1. Tidy your space – I know that I said the point of this was to relax, but hear me out, tidying and organising doesn’t have to be a stressful task, nor does it have to be hard work, take the time and don’t rush the process. I find that tidying and clearing my space gives me such a sense of clarity, it puts me in a headspace where I feel ready to take on anything that life throws at me.
  2. Pamper your self – this one might make a bit more sense and for obvious reasons, take the time to pamper yourself; put on a face mask, do your nails, do you hair, this is one of the best ways to practice self-care.
  3. Go for a walk – going for a walk is my favourite way to reflect, it gives you a moment to be alone and really reflect on the events of the day, it isn’t stressful and it’s the perfect way to get a little bit of light exercise in.
  4. Read a book / listen to an audiobook – sometimes the best form of self-care is to turn if your mind from your struggles and concentrate on something other then what you have going on in your life, even if just for a minute.
  5. Journal – My final and favourite point, this blog post is called reflection and self cafe right? Journaling for me is like having a counselling session without having to go and see a counsellor (not to say that this should replace a counsellor) but it’s an amazing way to get thoughts and feelings out of your head so that you can organise them… and… you guessed it reflects.

I have found that one of the best ways to practice self care, is to be more mindful, and these small activities such as journaling and tidying your space can really help to encourage those moments of mindfulness. With that being said if you are looking to become more mindful in your self-care routine I would definitely recommend giving one of these a try.

Your results are back… You have PCOS PT.1


Chances are if you have been diagnosed with Polly Cystic Ovarian Syndrome, your diagnosis’s started with your doctor uttering the following words ‘Your results are back… you have PCOS’ and the conversation doesn’t tend to go any further than that. This was the conversation I had with my doctor 4 years ago… and since then I have been battling with a condition that no one seems to know very much about, well not in the medical profession anyway. So let me tell you a little about how I got set on this journey.

Around 4 years ago, at the age of 19, I started to notice some changes in my my body that I couldn’t really explain, I didn’t understand what was going on and I definitely didn’t realise that they were all connected. I had just started a job in the world of recruitment and up until that time I had only ever been working in retail, it was a massive culture shock to me, it was intense, fast passed, and extremely stressful. After around 6 months of working there my periods disappeared sometimes for months on end and when they did finally come they were heavy and hit with a pain like no other. I was only 18 at the time, and simply put it down to a change in work pace, and told myself that it was an issue that my body would simply work through naturally.

That’s when the physical changes hit, and these were changes that I wouldn’t be able to ignore so easy. The irregular periods were quickly followed by acne… on my back, I developed severe back acne, with outbursts so painful that sometimes I was unable to lay on my back at all, and then came the sudden weight gain.

The weight gain was the hardest part for me, not only was I up 3 dress sizes but like with any sudden weight gain, I was also covered in stretch marks, making me feel so self-conscious that at this point I didn’t even want to leave my house due to the frustration and the constant insecurity. For many women, the weight gain part can be very confusing, If you are anything like me your eating habits didn’t change and if anything I was eating less because I was so busy.

And the third and final symptom for me was excessive facial hair. and if everything else wasn’t enough that was the final straw for me, and really the thing that made me say ‘This is not normal, this is not ok, I need some professional help’. So I took myself to the doctors, where the lady weighed me, took note of the symptoms, and finally after watching her for what felt like forever flick through a book, she turned to me and said, you may have PCOS, she then explained that I would be sent for tests. When I asked exactly what this meant, she simply printed off some pages from an online search and told me to read through.

When I left the doctors office, I was terrified… armed with only a piece of paper printed directly from google, explaining all of the complications of PCOS, and the only words that were screaming out to me were; INFERTILITY, DIABETES, HEART DISEASE. at this point, One Question remained… What happens now?
